I'm not a terribly religious person, and wasn't ra I'm not a terribly religious person, and wasn't raised as a Catholic, but it's hard to spend as much time as I do in Italy and not recognize the importance of the Catholic church in the world. I always admired Pope Francis’ unwavering embrace of diversity, inclusion, equity and kindness - things that are sorely lacking in this world - especially now with a regime of cruelty, intolerance and chaos affecting multiple parts of the world order. Francis' life of service points us toward how to live our lives and his death leaves a hole in the Earth.

A few days ago, here in Cortona, Tuscany, we witnessed the Good Friday procession in which several enormous wooden figures of Christ are borne around this hilly place by as many as a dozen citizens of the town, culminating in a solemn ceremony in the town’s main piazza. Watching, I couldn’t help but think of how ordinary people can lift us out of despair and toward a better world.
