Photographer, Educator, Writer
In Italy & Beyond
I’ve been photographing the architectural landscapes and lived spaces of Italy since 1989. What first drew me in – and continues to hold my attention – is the way religious, public, and vernacular structures shape daily life. Stone, light, ritual, memory – these are the threads I’ve followed for decades.
These same ideas also manifest themselves in photographs I make in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan, which has offered inspiration since my childhood.
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Illinois Wesleyan University and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Bennington College. In 1983, I attended Ansel Adams’ final workshop in Carmel, California – an experience that planted the original seed for the teaching and workshop work I continue today.
My photographs of Italy have been exhibited widely in solo exhibitions and are included in numerous public and private collections. I’m Professor Emeritus of Photography at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where I taught from 1984 to 2014. I’ve also served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Society for Photographic Education and am an Apple Distinguished Educator and certified Apple Teacher.
Most fall semesters, I teach in the University of Georgia’s Cortona Studies Abroad program, leading courses in photography, videography, and arts-based inquiry. Working with students in Italy each year keeps my own practice responsive and engaged.
Each week, I publish a new piece on At Home In Time, my space on Substack. Consider subscribing to read along with my current thoughts on places, people and images.
I host two podcasts that remain good resources even though new episodes have been on pause for a while. Camera Position, focuses on the creative side of image-making, and the History of Photography Podcast. Both archives hold a rich resource of photography’s impact on all of us.
I divide my time between Wisconsin and Michigan in the U.S. and Cortona, Tuscany – a place that has become a second home and an ongoing source of inspiration for both my work and my teaching.

At Home In Time:
Photography & Writing
At Home In Time is where my photographs meet the stories that shaped them. I write about photography, travel, and the creative life – not as a scroll of quick takes, but as a slower conversation. I share the way a place feels, the way light falls, the way an image comes to life – without the noise of social media getting in the way.
